Content and structure elements

Scope and content

The collection, like others donated from the Genesee County Historical Society, covers a wide range of topics. It appears that staff and volunteers of GCHS combined many unrelated records into a single accession. Of the more significant are business ledgers used by George W. Hill throughout the 1840s to 1870s, several diaries and maps, including a map of the Crapo farm, election pamphlets from the 1860s to 1930s, correspondence of the Wesson family, personal records of Harry C. Hill, and court records from dozens of cases and suits. Records exist from the Ladies’ Library Associations from Flint and Atlas Township, though more from the latter. Publications include several issued by Durant Motors.

System of arrangement

Past practices described the contents of this collection individually. Each item received an object ID number and was treated as a distinct artifact. Records have been reunited, but their original order may have been lost.

Conditions of access and use elements

Conditions governing access

No restrictions. Contact the Collections Department to arrange use for research.

Physical access

The collection is housed inside sixteen Hollinger boxes and two flat file folders. Paper composes the majority medium of the contents. Entries recorded in ledgers are predominately written by hand and in cursive. Most content is printed on paper.

The general condition of the collection is fair. Ledgers largely retain their spines and flexibility in their pages. Yellowing has occurred to varying extents. The same applies to unfixed pieces of paper. Crease marks crisscross items that were removed due to their large size and placed into flat file folders. None appear to show signs of tearing at their creases. Many documents were housed inside plastic bags and sheeting. They were removed and the plastic was discarded.
