Content and structure elements

Scope and content

The scrapbooks contain many clippings and other items relating to Flint and Genesee County and areas beyond. Some of them come from the state of Michigan. The scrapbooks are being retained due to containing content regarding the history of the county, including several articles on schools throughout the county.

Loose contents were previously placed into plastic bags. They were removed from these bags and transferred to acid-free folders for better preservation. They retain the organization they were found having in the bags.

Weeding of the scrapbooks was an impossibility as it meant causing significant physical damage.

System of arrangement

Past practices described the contents of this collection individually. Each item received an object ID number and was treated as a distinct artifact. Records have been reunited, but their original order may have been lost.

Conditions of access and use elements

Conditions governing access

No restrictions. Contact the Collections Department and the Archivist to arrange use for research at collections@sloanlongway.org or (810) 237-3421.

Physical access

The two scrapbooks make up the majority of the collection. They are housed outside of folders in a single Hollinger box. Loose contents are housed in a pair of acid-free folders. Paper composes the majority of the medium. That in the scrapbooks is glued to pages.

The condition of the collection is generally good. Yellowing is common has occurred most heavily on newspaper clippings housed in the folders. Clippings in the scrapbooks show less serious evidence of yellowing. Scrapbook pages are stiff but remain fixed to their spines and show few, if any, signs of fraying or tearing along their edges. The spine of Scrapbook I is in danger of falling apart. This scrapbook should be handled with the utmost care.

Acquisition and appraisal elements

Custodial history

The scrapbooks and their contents were compiled by an individual described in the accession file as M.S. Elmore. It is unknown what this person’s gender was or his or her relation to Flint and Genesee County. The scrapbooks were in the possession of Marquette Museum until 1958 when it transferred ownership to Genesee County Historical Society. GCHS donated the scrapbooks to Sloan Museum in 1965.
