Content and structure elements

Bereik en inhoud

Numerous documents relating to the Crapo Family compose the collection, but particularly of Henry H. Crapo and Mary Ann Crapo. Documents include family correspondence, valentines sent by John Orrell to Mary Ann, a handwritten manuscript from 1843 by Mary Ann on why learning is preferable to financial wealth, a 1904 typed manuscript celebrating the life of Henry Crapo, and Civil War-era military passes issued to John Orrell in 1862. Other documents of interest include correspondence from the Cemetery Board of New Bedford, Massachusetts and teaching certificates issued to Mary Ann Crapo from New Bedford in 1852, 1853, and 1856.

Ordeningstelsel

Past practices described the contents of this collection individually. Each item received an object ID number and was treated as a distinct artifact. Records have been reunited, but their original order may have been lost.

Conditions of access and use elements

Voorwaarden voor raadpleging

No restrictions. Contact the Collections Department and the Archivist to arrange use for research at collections@sloanlongway.org or (810) 237-3421.

Physical access

Paper composes the medium of the collection. All records are housed inside legal length acid-free folders. The folders are housed inside a legal-length Hollinger box.

The general condition of the collection is fair despite the age of many contents. Yellowing is present on nearly every document to varying extents. Crease marks, fraying, and tears mark many documents. The documents retain much flexibility, but those from the Antebellum Period should be handled with care as they are the oldest.
