Content and structure elements
Scope and content
The collection consists of four ledgers that document financial activities and sales of Willy and Cumings, who operated wholesale store in the 1860s and 1870s. Both men appear to have kept meticulous track of purchases by them and their customers. Double entry booking was used to track the amount of money available to the store on a daily basis. Most sales are listed as “Cash for Merchandise.” Some sales occurred on credit and entries to record payments done in installments. Occasionally some sales involve the names of products or individuals. The store also prepared prescriptions on the orders of doctors.
System of arrangement
Past practices described the contents of this collection individually. Each item received an object ID number and was treated as a distinct artifact. Records have been reunited, but their original order may have been lost.
Conditions of access and use elements
Conditions governing access
No restrictions. Contact the Collections Department to arrange use for research.
Physical access
The ledgers are housed in acid-free folders inside a single Hollinger box. One ledger was deemed too large for a folder and is housed in the box. Each ledger is hard covered. Paper is the sole media present. Writing of activities occurred in ink and in cursive.
The general condition is fair. Pages have yellowed slightly but maintain much flexibility. No tears or fraying have occurred on pages. Spines of ledgers are weak. Handle the ledgers with care.
